Pre-Race
San Diego to Owensboro, Kentucky
Day 0 of the Great Race - The Trophy Run
Today was the Trophy Run, where we had the chance to rally around the beautiful town of Owensboro, Kentucky. The weather was incredibly hot, with temperatures hitting the 90s, making our black car feel like an oven. I can’t imagine how those in open vehicles manage it! Despite the heat, we pushed through and saw miles upon miles of farmland and rolling hills. We ended the day with one ACE and a total of 26 seconds! It was a great warm-up, and we’re looking forward to the official start tomorrow here in Owensboro. Stay tuned for more updates as we embark on this journey. Make sure to follow along—we’ll be sharing updates in each city we visit.
And please check out my YouTube channel, @ahnaholder, as I attempt to post videos from the road. The first episode is Ed Overmyer and his 1964 Jaguar E-type.
Leading up to Race Day
We have arrived in Owensboro, Kentucky. On Monday, I got a text from the race director that said my car wouldn’t start when they were unloading it off the truck. A dying battery has been a problem for a few weeks, but I thought I left the door ajar too long and ran the battery down, or you name it and the battery died. Fortunately, I have a little charger I can start the car with and it has done the trick. But since it has continued to be a problem and this IS race time I was able to recruit some race friends to help me get to the bottom of it. First was a trip to Autozone where we picked up a new battery. Next, a call to California for a new alternator. Then Roger, Team #3, stopped by and noticed a fuse wire running to the alternator. I won’t get into the details, or even remember any of what Roger gathered on his call with Powermaster, but we stopped by Napa and picked up a few things and it’s fixed! I did pack an ohm reader (because George Sage always starts any problem solving with an ohm reader!) and it proved to be very useful.
So far the temperature has been hot and humid, but that’s how these events usually go.
